The National Institutes of Health recommend gastric bypass as a last resort for weight loss. As such, many insurance companies also require documentation of medically managed diets prior to authorizing a policy holder to have gastric bypass. Annie, our PA, can provide this resource for patients whose insurance companies require this documentation. It is important to stress, however, that even a modest amount of weight loss before surgery helps the operation go smoother; so even those patients who do not need documentation can benefit. Those patients who prefer a less invasive approach to weight loss are welcome as well. A medically managed diet program would be developed and tailored to each individual patient. This is a team effort between you and Annie that would involve monthly appointments aimed at identifying diet and exercise patterns, finding healthier alternatives, nutrition counseling, tracking your progress and most importantly providing encouragement along the way. Your overall health is very important to us and as part of this medically managed diet program Annie will also be monitoring your cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugars etc. in conjunction with your primary care physician to ensure that you receive adequate treatment of other medical conditions associated with obesity.
Karen our program dietitian has done extensive research regarding the post-operative dietary needs of the gastric bypass patient. In addition to our patients pre- and postoperative appointments, Karen is available for additional dietary counseling, education and support. Karen also provides nutritional refresher courses in conjunction with support group quarterly. To contact Karen directly call (208) 440-5041 or email her at kcmangum@aol.com
